Awaken Church is coming
to seattle

What is the timeline for Awaken coming to Seattle?
“The announcement of Awaken Church coming to Seattle was made to the Hope Village Church congregation on May 5th. As it stands currently, HVC Sunday services will continue to run as normal until June 2nd, 2024. After that, the new chapter of Awaken Church coming to Seattle begins!
Who is Awaken and what is our connection to them?
Awaken Church was started when Ps. Jurgen, Ps. Leanne and their small family moved in 2005 from Australia to San Diego.  From the humble beginnings of 1 church in 1 location, starting with 50 people meeting in hotels, school gymnasiums, performing arts centers, and at one point, a hotel parking lot, Awaken Church has grown from being just a vision in Ps. Jurgen and Leanne’s hearts to now being a multi-campus, multigenerational church with 10 locations, multiple regions, and thousands of people with lives changed and impacted every week.

Ps Drew & Emma moved to Seattle to plant Hope Village in March 2020 after being a part of Awaken church for 9 years. For 5 of those years, they were campus pastors at one of the Awaken church’s locations under the covering and leadership of Pastors Jurgen and Leanne Matthesius and the Awaken team. Pastors Drew and Emma Davies felt to launch a church in the Pacific Northwest, and Awaken church supported them in the launch and journey. So, while Hope Village was not operationally connected to Awaken church, they always were strongly connected relationally with the Davies continuing to recognize the Matthesius as their personal pastoral covering.

To find out more about Awaken Church we would encourage you to explore their website, listen to preaching messages and watch one of their location services online.
Who will the Pastors of Awaken Seattle be?
Awaken church is led by Senior and founding Pastors Jurgen & Leanne Matthesius. They have appointed Pastors Colin and Melissa Higginbottom as the Regional overseers of the NW Region, which includes Boise and now the Puget Sound. Ps Jurgen and Leanne and Ps Colin and Melissa will appoint a strong Campus Pastor couple in the future. However, we are not in a rush to do this. Instead will build a healthy, strong team and raise and release from there.  Colin and Melissa plan to be very involved in all developments of Awaken Puget Sound.

The Higginbottoms are natives of the PNW. Melissa grew up in Puyallup, and Colin grew up in Federal Way.  Colin and Melissa met in Edgewood, WA, and were married in 2004 in WA state.   They have 4 amazing kids.  Colin and Melissa founded Sustainable Interiors, headquartered in Washington, in 2005.  Currently, Sustainable employs a team of over 50 exceptional people.   Sustainable has been awarded the “Top 100 Companies to Work For in WA State” for the last 8 consecutive years.

Pastors Colin and Melissa have been part of Awaken Church since 2011 and were ordained as Awaken Pastors in 2016. Colin received his business degree from Hawaii Pacific University and his Master’s in Theology from Christian Life School of Theology.  Melissa studied Dance at Cornish School of the Arts in Seattle and Christian Counseling at Oral Roberts University.

Ps. Colin and Melissa are the founders of Pathfinders, Awaken’s Marketplace Ministry. They are currently the Regional Pastors of the Pacific Northwest, which has a thriving campus in Boise and soon will be the beautiful Puget Sound. Colin and Melissa are excited to come alongside you and partner with you to become all that God has called you to be.
What is happening to the other Hope Village Church staff and pastors with the transition?
The HVC staff will become Awaken Church team members. Pastor Dan and Lavonne Peterson will be ordained under the Awaken covering. The team will continue to thrive and grow together within the health, discipleship, and leadership of the Awaken Church team.
What is happening with the Davies family after the transition?
Pastors Drew and Emma have made the decision to move their family back to San Diego California, where they moved from when they originally came to plant HVC in 2020.

After this season of church planting, they will have a season of rest as they reintegrate their family back into the life and family of Awaken Church.
What about the financial resources and responsibilities of HVC?
In acquiring the assets of HVC, Awaken has also agreed to take on many of the responsibilities that come with those resources, particularly as it relates to the real property owned, leased and used by HVC to facilitate its ministry. HVC will still retain its external bookkeeping company to assist during this transition.
What is happening with the Hope Village Eastside building?
Towards the end of 2023, Hope Village Church was able to secure a long term lease on a permanent Eastside location in the Redmond area.

Since that time, we have been able to plan and obtain permits for renovation of the building, which will commence construction in June 2024 and be complete in the fall of 2024.  We are excited for this great Eastside Redmond Campus.
What is happening with the Hope Village Renton building?
It was such a significant moment in Hope Village history when, in 2022, we were able to purchase our first church property in Renton.

Regarding all buildings and locations, Awaken will continue to review and process the viability of each location as it lines up with our assignment from God for the region and our high standards for financial stewardship as well as the capacity of our great leadership team.

Awaken definitely recognizes HVC’s stewardship of financial resources and is honored to build upon a young but healthy history of generosity and financial faithfulness from those who have sowed into HVC to date.
What will happen with community and discipleship over transition? Will there be any ministries running and events? What about Kids and Youth?
Awaken Church is passionate and intentional about creating opportunities for its congregation to experience community and discipleship. It also recognizes the desire for ministries that serve specific needs and events to continue within the transition period.

Many of the specific details on what this will look like are still being finalized over the coming weeks. In regards to all ministries (men's and women’s prayer, youth, village nights, community events, etc.) will be communicated.
What should I do from here?
Continue your relationship with Jesus and your dedication to prayer and the word of God. Continue attending services. Stay in community and continue building strong, healthy relationships. Reach out to the team if you have any follow-up questions.

Be excited for the plans of God and our future together in the Great Pacific NW.
